The Double Edge Sword By Paul Easton
So what will give you the cutting edge for getting visitors to your site and selling to them? Well its not new but can be confusing – what every user has - email, but terms are becoming mixed lets clear up some terms:
- Opt In - This is a term which denotes the receiver has agreed to receive specific information from you. The best version which is the double opt in method. This means that they have requested to join your list or ezine. If you post to free for all links sites and get placed on an email list, strictly speaking this is not an opt in list but a...
- Safe List - A safe list is a list of users who are send to have an interest in receiving your material. The users have never requested to be on a list or receive any information about the subject.
So why am I pointing this out to you? Which of the above lists do you think would be most responsive to your message and the messages of those who may advertise in your ezine? Those that have requested the information and confirmed that they are interested or those that have post to FFA site an got put on a list, and probably hit delete every time the message box shows where the email came from.
Whenever you are looking to do some email or ezine advertising always ask how the list was made. Some consider opt in and safe list to be the same thing. Wrong.
Just after I got online I was caught in this trap - sent a solo offer to what I thought was an opt in list (this was the term that was used on the site) It turned out to be a safe list. Out of 50 000 the solo ad went out to, I received 5 responses This site continues to call its list "Opt In"
- Spam - What is it really? To me it's a message, which says: "Users make $5000 a start today!" or something similar. I did not request it so it was unsolicited and normally implies no work or cash is required.
The big question, does it work - The short answer Yes-if its targeted BUT It is the on-line version of fraud, because 90% of the time, it comes from a free email source with a fake name. Now would you really do business from some one on this level?
But as with most things, if you put enough messages out you may receive some sales at the cost of your ISP, your web host, your standards and your credibility. So you wouldn't receive any sales if they can't reach you to order. My opinion - Don't do it, the price is too high.
- Targeted email - This is what a lot of ezine owners do building a list of other ezine owners who accept articles for publication. Now even though these users have not exactly requested information from you, they are a very responsive group.
Building a personalized list like this, and respecting that these are busy professional users (who constantly receive lots of spam) can bring response rates of up to 30% or more with in 24 hours.
Now remember the double edge sword, all it takes is one complain from a receiver of your message to shut down your site. So this list is best build over time requesting information from ezine owners, it takes time and needs to be maintained but can be the key to quick profits if you decide to Joint Venture with owners for a win win.
I know one list owner who has built up a list of 10 000 ezine owners that are happy to receive information from this requires an amount of trust to work but brings good results.
I also know of 1 ezine owner creating $27,450 in sales in 24 hours from a personalized list of names. It works! Comments to Paul Easton paule@ihug.co.nz
